The city of Tampa and the Tampa, St. Petersburg area, is the second largest metropolitan area of Florida, ranking just behind the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale metropolitan area in South Florida. There are numerous districts within Tampa that have their own distinct personality. West Tampa, close to Tampa Bay, is one of the interesting neighborhoods in Tampa.
Established in 1884, West Tampa is one of the oldest districts within Tampa. The city, just a few miles west of Ybor City, attempted to get in on the cigar manufacturing business and had a good deal of success, particularly in the early years of the 20th century. With one of the largest Spanish and Latino populations in the area, West Tampa is a middle class neighborhood, replete with a historic downtown and many restaurants and shops that cater to the preferences of the community. Toasted Cuban bread, cafe con leche, a roz con pollo and many other Cuban and Latin favorites, can be found in the many family owned restaurants.
Located within West Tampa are the offices of the Tampa Museum of Art as well as a Gallery on North Howard Avenue. The Tampa Bay Arts Center opened in 2007 and features more than 20 artist studios and regular exhibitions of the art.
Located within a short drive are many popular attractions that visitors and residents of the area can enjoy. Major League baseball, football, hockey and soccer are all represented. Baseball's Rays, football's Bucaneers, hockey's Lightning and the North American Soccer League's Rowdies, all call Tampa home. Just to the east of West Tampa is Ybor City, a city that was revitalized in recent years and features night clubs, Spanish eateries and, of course, cigars. Busch Gardens is one of the major theme parks in Florida and there is also an impressive aquarium near the Port of Tampa. For those who enjoy gambling, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino offers an exciting night out. With nearby beaches, cruise ships, shopping, restaurants, museums and more, West Tampa and the Tampa area have a lot to offer.
